The BYD B12E03A is a battery-electric, low-floor single-deck city bus offered by Chinese bus manufacturer BYD Auto Industry (比亞迪). It is a model variant of BYD’s flagship BYD B12 line of electric buses.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) ordered 160 units in 2025, as part of a larger order for 660 electric buses under Contract PT602. The buses feature a three-door configuration and are assigned the registration numbers SG3621B – SG3780A. They are expected to enter passenger service at the end of 2026.

The procurement forms part of Singapore’s broader transition towards an electric public bus fleet, with LTA targeting half of the public bus fleet to be electric by 2030. Further information on Singapore’s electric bus rollout is detailed in the article Electric Buses in Singapore.

These buses share many similarities with a previous batch of 300 BYD B12 buses procured by LTA under Contract PT601A (but of the BYD BC12A04 model sub-type).

Bus Model background

BYD introduced its B-series electric bus range on 29 July 2020. The initial range comprised the 10-metre B10 and 12-metre B12 single-deck buses, as well as the 12-metre B12D double-deck bus.

The buses use twin wheel-hub hairpin electric motors connected directly to the driven wheels. This configuration eliminates the need for a conventional transmission and driveshaft, thus maximising space in the passenger cabin. The B-series also features a six-in-one electronic controller incorporating silicon carbide (SiC) components. The unit combines the controls for the two electric motors, steering control, air compressor, DC-DC conversion and power distribution into a single module.

The B12 is offered with BYD’s proprietary Blade battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The battery design is intended to provide high energy density and enhanced safety. The battery system incorporates liquid cooling to regulate operating temperatures and a battery management system for monitoring and control. BYD also offers cell-to-chassis (CTC) integration, in which the battery is incorporated into the vehicle’s chassis structure to improve packaging efficiency and lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity.

Earlier units in Singapore

The BYD B12 (model designation: BYD B12A03) was first exhibited in Singapore at the Singapore International Transport Congress & Exhibition (SITCE) in November 2022. The same bus later underwent refitting works and was offered to LTA for revenue service trials. Registered as SG4013A, this bus was operated by SBS Transit from January 2024 to January 2025.

Local private bus operator ComfortDelGro Bus procured a fleet of ten BYD B12A03 electric buses for use on campus shuttle bus routes at NUS and NTU, entering service between November and December 2022.

On 25 November 2023, BYD was awarded LTA Contract PT601A for 240 BYD B12 valued at S$108.1 million. LTA subsequently announced on 23 October 2024 that it had exercised an option to purchase 60 additional BYD buses, increasing the total to 300 buses. These buses were of the BYD BC12A04 model sub-type, and bodied by Zhuhai Guangtong. Sentosa Development Corporation also bought 14 buses of the same specification for Sentosa bus services.

LTA PT602 Tender

On 15 December 2025, BYD (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. was awarded a contract to supply 160 single-deck electric buses under Contract PT602C, for S$71.3 million. The contract formed part of the LTA’s wider procurement of 660 electric buses under Contract PT602, which also involved Chinese manufacturers CRRC, Yutong and Zhongtong. The buses supplied under PT602C were identified as BYD B12E03A units, which are also part of the BYD B12 family of buses.

Under the same PT602 procurement, BYD was also awarded Contract PT602D, valued at S$34.5 million, for the supply of 50 double-deck electric buses. These BYD BC12A05 buses are covered in a separate article.

The first unit for the batch was sighted at BYD Singapore premises in August 2026. The 160 buses are assigned the registration numbers SG3621B – SG3780A. Buses are expected to enter passenger service at the end of 2026.

Prior to entering revenue service, one unit (chassis: LC04S44RXTE000001) was exhibited at Singapore Urban Mobility Week (SUMW) 2026, held at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre in November 2026.

As with the earlier BYD BC12A04 buses ordered by LTA, the BYD B12E03A buses are bodied by Zhuhai Guangtong Vehicle Manufacture Co., Ltd. in Zhuhai, China, and shipped to Singapore as completed buses. As such, the bodywork design shares many similarities with the previous batch.

Model Overview & Exterior

The BYD B12E03A buses are built by Zhuhai Guangtong Vehicle Manufacture Co., Ltd., a contract manufacturer of buses based in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China. BYD supplies the bus chassis, while Zhuhai Guangtong assembles the completed bus in Zhuhai before delivery to Singapore.

The bodywork design shares many similarities with the previous batch of BYD BC12A04 buses ordered by LTA in 2023. These PT602 buses, referred to as GTK6127BEVB3 by Zhuhai Guangtong, represent an adaptation of an existing bodywork design launched by Guangtong for the GTK6127BEVB line of electric buses sometime around 2023.

The bus incorporates aesthetic elements such as triple-grouped headlights and taillights, and roof skirts that visually minimise the battery pack and air-conditioning unit for a sleek and modern appearance. The headlight/taillight design is similar to those used on Alexander Dennis buses—which Zhuhai Guangtong also manufactures under contract.

Compared with the earlier BYD BC12A04 buses, these buses reposition the roof-mounted batteries toward the rear, instead of toward the front. The rear EDS is now enlarged to slow visual alerts to other road users, and the rear exit hatch is now moved to a lower position to fit the larger EDS.

Finally, these buses also use camera mirror systems as standard, hence the absence of the usual wing mirrors.

Interior

The BYD B12E03A features a fully low-floor design for step-free access throughout the bus. LTA’s PT602 specifications require a three-door layout for ease of passenger movement, with the rearmost door located behind the rear axle, but at the cost of seating capacity.

Seats are upholstered in blue for general use (20 seats) and maroon for priority seating (12 seats). Notably, the LTA no longer desinates the frontmost row of seats as priority seats.

Compared with the earlier BYD BC12A04 buses procured under Contract PT601, the B12E03A adopts a revised battery arrangement, with more battery packs mounted on the roof and cell-to-chassis (CTC) technology integrating the remaining traction batteries into the chassis structure. This arrangement contributes to lower raised seating platforms within the passenger compartment, addressing earlier feedback concerning high interior steps on the older buses.

The rear section of the bus sees the addition of four seats behind the third door, where battery compartments were previously located in BYD BC12A04 buses. This increases the seating capacity to 32, up from 28 before.

Accessibility

LTA specifications call for two wheelchair bays for passengers travelling in wheelchairs (PIWs) or using personal mobility aids. Both wheelchair bays are located opposite the exit doors.

The forward wheelchair bay has three foldable seats, while the rear wheelchair bay has one foldable seat integrated into the backrest. These foldable seats do not count towards the seating capacity.

Pivoting handlebars can be deployed or stowed for convenience; this particular design locked via an index plunger first appeared on ADL E500 3-door buses, and was also used on earlier BYD BC12A04 buses.

Contract PT602 come fitted with 2-in-1 wheelchair ramps, which can be deployed either manually or automatically.

Other Features

The BYD B12E03A buses are installed with Electronic Display Sign (EDS) and Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) units from Luminator.

Full-colour Electronic Display Signs (EDS) are fitted, including a larger rear display capable of showing the bus service number and destination, as well as visual alerts to surrounding road users when the bus is stopping, moving off, or when passengers are boarding and alighting. These additional alert functions are scheduled to be activated in 2027, according to an LTA factsheet published in November 2026.

The interior PIDS comprises two display screens: a front-mounted orange LED display showing basic bus service information, and a mid-mounted LCD screen providing additional information such as subsequent bus stops, and rail connections. Another external-facing LCD screen informs commuters about upcoming rail connections along the bus route.

USB Charging Ports are also installed at alternate seats.

Driver’s Cab

Contract PT602 buses come fitted with a Camera Mirror System in place of usual wing mirrors. Display screens located in the driver’s cab show real-time footage from high-definition cameras mounted on the exterior of the bus—where traditional wing mirrors are mounted.

The camera mirror system comprises three screens – two in place of the original wing mirrors, and a third for the bus’ left and front blind spots.
