Construction

On 12 July 2019, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) called a tender for Proposed Design and Construction of Bus Interchange & Associated Works at Venture Drive (Reference PT375), which was scheduled for completion by 2023. The contract was awarded to Tat Hin Builders Pte Ltd on 16 March 2020 for a sum of $19.73 million.

The new bus interchange would serve to boost the public transport network in Jurong East as part of the wider Jurong Lake District, envisioned as the second Central Business District in Singapore. Increased human traffic in the area, brought about by the planned High-Speed Rail station (cancelled indefinitely) and future commercial and residential developments, necessitated a new bus interchange to spread out passenger numbers and avoid heavy congestion at a single bus interchange.

Bus interchanges in Jurong East have undergone several changes since the first interchange opened in 1985 and closed in 2011, moving to a temporary interchange nearby. The site of the old interchange was expected to be redeveloped into a new Integrated Transport Hub (ITH), but a change of plans ensued that would relocate the ITH to a new MOT-LTA building located at the site of the temporary interchange. A new interim Jurong East Bus Interchange, which opened in 2020 and replaced the first temporary interchange, was too small to accommodate all existing bus services and resulted in Bus Service 78 having to terminate at Jurong Gateway Road, with layovers performed at Ulu Pandan Bus Depot (and dead mileage incurred as a result), as well as Service 79 amended to start from Boon Lay Int and loop at Jurong Gateway Road.

While the Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange opened on 26 November 2023, the ITH at Jurong Gateway Road is projected for completion in 2027.

Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange is probably a permanent addition to the bus interchange nominal roll.

Eventually, if and when Malaysia finally make up their mind to have a normal HSR within Malaysia and both countries have another RTS Link to connect the southernmost HSR station to Jurong Lake District – even if at 250km/h, the total travel time would probably be 3 hours, and it would still be 50% time savings compared to the long-distance bus and KTM ETS, and same duration as aeroplane – if and when that happens, the Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange can be replaced with an Integrated Transport Hub next to the possible RTS Link station or HSR station at Jurong Lake District.

Nonetheless, in the foreseeable future, the present location kinda resembles the new Shenton Way Bus Terminal, whereby the surrounding area is also office towers.

The point is, the Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange is probably here to stay, and it would be the newest addition to the bus interchange nominal roll since the opening of Joo Koon Bus Interchange in 2015.

160 relocation to Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange is an indication that they are intending for all the cross border bus services in Jurong East area to be consolidated in Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange.

Which will make some sense next time, when the cross border rail service (either HSR or RTS Link) is eventually finalised. The future Jurong Town Hall station, bus interchange and cross border rail station looks set to become a transport hub for Malaysia bound transport services.

Given that Venture Drive now connects to J Gateway Road I wonder if 160 will be amended to call at Bef JE Stn since it no longer terminates at JEBI and the walk would be longer

I have a hunch that services 78, 79, 160 and 870 will be routed to serve this interchange. As more Tengah BTOs are completed over the next few months, we may see new services being introduced in Jurong East Bus Interchange (instead of Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange). Since there will be free berth slots at current service 160 and 334

Apparently 79 isn’t getting touched. Also, 993 remains at JETI while 160 will go to JTH.

Service 79 might be touched in the future as the route might be converted into a bidirectional service between Boon Lay and Jurong Town Hall.
