Service 147 is a trunk route serving many residential areas along its route such as Clementi, Commonwealth, Bukit Merah, Serangoon and Hougang. Running from West to Northeast of Singapore, the route cuts through the City, also serving Chinatown, Bras Basah and Little India. It also duplicates the North East Line from Outram Park to Serangoon and Hougang.
This service was slated to be amended during the North-East Line Bus Rationalization of 2003 which intended to delete unnecessary sectors of various bus routes to avoid duplication with the new North-East MRT Line (NEL). However, it was later spared from rationalization along with Service 133. Currently, long segments of route which duplicate the NEL still receives generous passenger numbers.

I saw a Scania KUB 320 today at Commonwealth, this service should shorten to loop at Niel Road (Near Cantoment Police complex) from Clementi, Hougang to Clementi has also 165 via AMK, Lornie, Ulu Pandan

Sorry, Service 147 have high demand especially in the Northeast of Singapore. It’s impossible for Service 147 to be shortened unless if there’s a replacement service to cover Northeast side.
If Service 147 were to be rationalised during the NEL Rationalisation in 2003, IT it would have been shortened to Toa Payoh and loop at Clementi Ave 3.
More like Toa Payoh – Clementi as bidirectional route. And that will be wayback to 1970s – 1992, cause 147 was originally Toa Payoh. Later amended to Potong Pasir.
The reason why 147 go Hougang Central is because of merger of ex-Service 83 in 1992.
