Service 856 is a trunk service linking both residential and industrial areas around Marsiling, Admiralty Road West, Senoko and Sembawang Rd to various MRT stations and transport nodes. It is also the sole public bus service serving sections of Admiralty Rd, Admiralty Rd West, and Woodlands North MRT.
With high demand from both residential and industrial sectors, nearly all buses deployed on the route are high-capacity double-deck buses.
During peak hours, Service 981 compliments the service by strengthening bus connections between Sembawang MRT/Int and industrial areas around Admiralty Road West and Senoko.
Service 856 also encounters high demand from cross-border commuters heading from Woodlands Int/Marsiling MRT to Woodlands Checkpoint. Although duplicated by Service 950 along this sector, Service 950 is often filled to capacity when departing Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange, especially during peak hours.
With the opening of Thomson-East Coast Line 1 on 31 January 2020, Service 856 was amended to serve Woodlands North MRT Station along Woodlands North Coast Road in both directions (towards Yishun and towards Woodlands). Commuters should check the destination displayed on the bus Electronic Display Sign when boarding at Woodlands North.
