Contrary to its namesake, Lorong 1 Geylang Bus Terminal does not serve the residential estate of Geylang. For the history of bus services from the bus terminus, refer to the article on the history of Kallang/Whampoa bus services.
Introduction:
Geylang is a residential, industrial and commercial area located in the eastern region of Singapore, spanning the East from Jalan Eunos to Sims Way. It has been served by numerous trunk services along Changi Road/Geylang Road/Sims Avenue, Paya Lebar Road, Aljunied Road, MacPherson Road, Airport Road and Jalan Eunos since its development, which continue to cater to several residential neighbourhoods located sparsely across the area today.
While there is no specific town centre in Geylang due to its vast boundary, Eunos Bus Interchange serves as the regional transport hub for bus services in the housing estate, opening its doors on 10th December 1989 along Eunos Road 2.

Pre-Interchange Opening (until 1989):
Since the development of public housing blocks in Geylang, they were mainly served by long distance trunk services along Sims Avenue/Changi Road/Geylang Road, Paya Lebar Road, Aljunied Road and MacPherson Road. Due to the distinctly separate locations of these small housing estates, these major roads continue to serve as the main links to the various neighbourhoods today, along with other roads that were later built, such as Geylang East Central and Circuit Road, as well as the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) and Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).
The older residential neighbourhoods were served by dedicated roadside bus terminals located within the estate, such as theĀ Kaki Bukit Bus TerminalĀ (abolished in 1984),Ā Jalan Eunos Bus TerminalĀ (abolished in 1987), MacPherson Bus TerminalĀ (abolished in 1992), and Sims Place Bus Terminal, which remains functional today since its opening in 1976. Another roadside bus terminal was located within the former Paya Lebar Airport along Airport Road (Jalan Ang Teng), but was subsequently de-commissioned when civilian flight services were relocated to the Changi International Airport from 1981.
With the impending opening of Eunos MRT station by 1989, a bus interchange was proposed to be built along Eunos Road 2 near the MRT station, serving as a centralised transfer point between bus services and the MRT network. Since there is no formal town centre for the housing estates in Geylang, residents located further west of the area prefer travelling to MRT stations located nearer to their neighbourhoods in Paya Lebar and Aljunied, prior to the opening of Circle Line (CCL) in 2010 and Downtown Line (DTL) in 2017. In the meantime, an interimĀ Eunos Bus TerminalĀ was constructed along Sims Avenue, catering to several bus services around the region.
To link several neighbourhoods in Geylang to Eunos MRT station, 2 new feeder bus services – 382 & 385 – were implemented by SBS between 1986 & 1987.
On 10th December 1989, the new Eunos Bus Interchange was opened, offering a pleasant environment for bus passengers to transfer and wait for their buses. All bus services from the interim roadside terminus along Sims Avenue were relocated to the new interchange.
