Further Bus Service Developments in Marine Parade (1988 – Present)
Due to falling passenger demand and the opening of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, NTUC Comfort decided to discontinue CSS Bus Services 1 & 4 in 1988, leading to the permanent closure of the roadside bus terminus along Marine Terrace after 13 years of operations. The remaining CSS Bus Service 8 continued operations through Marine Parade housing estate as CSS Bus Service 608 until 2007, when it was finally discontinued by SMRT Buses, whose predecessor Trans-Island Bus Services (TIBS) had acquired SSB as a subsidiary since 1987.
In 2001, Marine Parade Bus Terminal was permanently closed to make way for the new Victoria School. As such, most of its bus services were amended to loop around the former site of the bus terminal, while Bus Service 196 was extended to Bedok New Town.
Several months later, Upper East Coast Bus Terminal was opened along Upper East Coast Road, absorbing Bus Services 13 & 853# from the former Marine Parade Bus Terminal. While the new bus terminal is technically located within Bedok New Town, it serves as a de facto bus terminus for several trunk services from Marine Parade, with the introduction of Bus Services 43 & 48 in 2005, as well as the route extension of Bus Service 55 – another former bus service from Marine Parade Bus Terminal – to the terminal in 2017.
