The Yutong E12DD is a fully electric double-deck city bus manufactured by Yutong in China. The bus model shares its model name with the more prevalent Yutong E12 single-deck electric city bus.

10 units of the Yutong E12DD bus were procured by the Land Transport Authority in 2018 as part of efforts to build a more environmentally friendly public bus fleet. A further 10 more Yutong E12 single-deck electric buses would be acquired, for a total of 20 Yutong electric buses. In total, 60 electric buses were procured from three separate manufacturers at a total sum of S$50.64 million.

Bus operators in China are primary customers of the Yutong E12DD, with units operating in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou, Shangqiu, Zhengzhou and Zhoukou.


The Yutong E12DD is marketed as an electric city bus capable of being fitted as a sightseeing bus, with a large upper deck windshield, large side windows and a panoramic sunroof, along with a suite of configurable interiors features for passenger comfort.

The bus design incorporates large-capacity batteries which allow the bus to travel more than 200 km on a single charge, under urban road conditions. Yutong touts cost savings of over 30% over a 5-year period as compared to an equivalent diesel-powered double-deck bus. Constant-power charging is said to reduce charging times by 25%; allowing for a charging period of just 1.9 hours at night. However, the actual battery capacity of the Singapore units is to be confirmed.

Yutong’s electric drive technology platform is called ReCtrl (or 睿控). In its most iteration, ReCtrl 4.0 (first released in 2017) combines four electric control technologies and four smart technologies as such:

  • Electric drivetrain
    — highly efficient electric motor replaces the traditional automatic transmission
  • Regenerative braking
    — motor acts as a generator during braking, recovering kinetic energy into electrical energy to be stored in the batteries
  • Electric steering
    — electro-hydraulic power steering requiring least steering effort
  • Electric air-conditioning
    — automatically-adjusted heating/cooling with independent zone control, offering at least 15% energy savings over traditional vehicle air-conditioners
  • Intelligent vehicle energy management system
    — overall management of energy consumption through onboard electronic control units and CAN bus network
  • Intelligent climate control
    — air-conditioning compressor reacts automatically to deliver optimum cooling capacity
  • Intelligent telematics
    — key vehicle operating parameters are transmitted over the internet for health and status monitoring
  • Intelligent charging
    — vehicle charging performance is recorded for monitoring


The Yutong E12DD is a fully electric city bus manufactured by the Chinese company Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co., Ltd (郑州宇通客车股份有限公司), which manufactures road vehicles (primarily buses). The E12DD is just one of Yutong’s electric bus products, alongside hybrid and regular diesel buses.

Photos of the Yutong E12DD were first circulated online in late August 2019, where the bus was spotted at a test centre in China.

The exterior bodywork styling appears to be modified off the original E12DD, featuring a different head and rear design that possibly takes inspiration from the Yutong City Master. The Yutong E12DD is offered at a length of 12.3m as standard but could have been shortened for the Singapore market. The vertical headlight housing is similar to that used on the BYD C6 and the STE-Linkker Autonomous Electric Bus.

The bus body is constructed out of high-strength steel. Features offered include IP68-rated electronics, electronically-controlled air suspension, dual-circuit air brakes with ABS among others, which are common to most modern buses. It is noted that a significant portion of space on the lower deck is occupied by batteries, hence the reduced passenger cabin space.

The buses were spotted in Singapore in February 2020.

Yutong E12DD buses are assigned the registration numbers SG7000S – SG7009T.

Charging Infrastructure

For the overnight charging of the Yutong E12 buses, overnight chargers have been installed at Bulim Bus Depot and Loyang Bus Depot, supplied by NARI.

    Screw that Citaro thing for Airport service,B3 A22 as well as B1 Euro6 A22 also got annoucement system.858 cannot do much except that the previous 6 A24 is just ok to cater the crowds..When 169 kapo 2-3 A24 it getting worse with 4-5 A24 on 858..Kranji should transfer one A24 and 3 A24 to AMK & WDL respectively..300 & 301 can use between 7-8 A24 with one being spare.900,901,911,912A,913 all need bendy supplements.

    Even though some may say this bus design very simplistic. But in my opinion, it’s just like the MAN Double Decker buses, with the exception that the front is even more simplistic than the MAN Double Decker bus design.

    After the glass-based Volvo B9TL design, the stylo milo MAN A95 design and the still-quite fashionable ADL Enviro500 design, we finally have a squarish no-frills new double decker bus design, which is something that used to feature among the public buses in Singapore in the past, and now we are bringing it back.

    I ever saw the first double decker bus introduced in Singapore, in black and white photo. That double decker bus looked exactly like this. Minus the modern features such as wheelchair accessible, etcetera.

    Finally something “normal”, after having so many “special” designs. It feels special to have something normal after having so many special, sometimes. 🙂

    I seriously hope LTA can consider to buy 130 units of bendy for shortest distance feeder and airport service.DDs for a short distance is crap

      100% agreed. People don’t even go to the second floor unless the bottom damn crowded, plus the dwell times at bus stops is super long.

        222, 240 291, 334 and 410 managed well using DD all these years.

      Don’t think so dude..The additional A95 can easily cover the 50 VSOs and the remaining O405Gs..There is upcoming 100 three doors useless 12.5m DDs too..13m is much better.

    Honestly speaking LTA shldve bought BENDY BUSES instead, especially to cope w/ the airshow crowd. Not DDs as they can cause safety problems. I almost fractured my back while alighting from a DD on 169.

      Agree. On some service, it is impractical to deploy DD as most people are on ultra short trips like 2-3 stops, so its out of the question to climb up and down. Resulting in crowded at lower deck, near empty in upper deck. Examples are 962, 804.
      Some services are restricted to SD only but highly in demand. Yet they introduced citaros. So u can expect no seats available, if u managed to board one. Best part is, it used to be mostly Bendy buses before. Example: 858.
      Almost all models are being topped up with government purchases, except A24. Those making the decisions probably are those who DRIVE TO WORK! Kudos.

      Agreed,But for short distance and airport svc only..Maybe 120 units is enough to distribute.Taking spaces or not SG always jam prone due to influx of PHVs..
