Introduction:
Central Area is a residential, retail and commercial area located in the central region of Singapore, spanning from Chinatown to Kampong Glam. Its residential areas have been served by numerous trunk services along New Bridge Road, North Bridge Road, South Bridge Road, Serangoon Road and Victoria Street since its development, which continue to connect these residential neighbourhoods located sparsely across the area today.
While there is no specific town centre in the Central Area due to its vast boundary, several bus terminals remain in operation in the Central Area today in Kampong Bahru, Shenton Way, Marina Centre and Queen Street.
Bus Services in Central Area (since 1971):
Since the development of public housing blocks in the Central Area, they were mainly served by long distance trunk services along Victoria Street/North Bridge Road, Serangoon Road/Jalan Besar and Eu Tong Sen Street/New Bridge Road/South Bridge Road. Due to the distinctly separate locations of these small housing estates, these major roads continue to serve as the main links to the various neighbourhoods today, along with other roads that were later built, such as Owen Road and Jalan Sultan, as well as the Central Expressway (CTE) and East Coast Parkway (ECP).
Unlike other housing estates, no bus interchange has been formally planned to serve the sparsely located neighbourhoods in the Central Area by the Singapore Bus Service (SBS), with a variety of trunk services already offered by the operator. Instead, roadside terminals, such as those located along Queen Street, South Canal Road, Tanjong Pagar Road and Prince Edward Road, had catered to the residents of the Central Area in the early 1970s.
By the late 1990s, only 4 main bus terminals would be located in the Central Area, namely New Bridge Road, Shenton Way, Marina Centre and Queen Street. In 2018, New Bridge Road Bus Terminal was relocated to a new facility near Kampong Bahru Road, while the bus terminals at Shenton Way and Marina Centre were relocated to adjacent locations to facilitate redevelopment.
