Further Transport Developments in Jurong West (1998 – Present)
In conjunction wth the opening of the Second Link to Malaysia in 1998, the Tuas Bus Terminal was constructed near the junction of Tuas West Drive and Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, catering to numerous cross-border bus routes to Malaysia, as well as four SBS bus routes that serve the developing industrial estates in Tuas West and Tuas South. While Bus Services 192 & 193 continue to operate from the bus terminal, Bus Service 182/182X was eventually integrated with the former Bus Service 183 in 2002, operating between Boon Lay Bus Interchange and the industrial developments in Tuas South.
Following the opening of the Tuas West Extension on the East West Line in 2017, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) launched 2 new industrial Bus Services 247 & 248 in Tuas under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP). A few months later, Tuas Bus Terminal was relocated to its existing premises housed above the Tuas MRT Depot.
In 2006, the former Boon Lay Bus Interchange was closed and demolished to make way for the extension of Jurong Point, which would be part of a new integrated development that include The Centris condominium. A temporary bus interchange along the junction of Jurong West Street 64 and Boon Lay Way catered to the needs of Jurong West residents, before the Integrated Transport Hub (ITH) opened for service in late 2009.
For a brief period of 5 months following the opening of the ITH, it operated simultaneously with the temporary bus interchange, as Bus Services 179 & 199 continued to operate from the temporary bus interchange due to the lack of parking spaces in the new ITH. The temporary bus interchange was eventually closed in mid-2010, as the ITH was made ready to absorb its 2 remaining trunk services.
Following the opening of Joo Koon MRT station on the Boon Lay Extension of the East West Line in 2009, the LTA proposed the development of a new bus interchange near the new MRT station, which would be housed within the proposed Fairprice Hub as part of an integrated development. After over 6 years of planning and construction, the Joo Koon Bus Interchange started operations in 3 tranches in 2015, absorbing 4 existing Jurong industrial services from Boon Lay Bus Interchange, as well as catering to the launch of 3 new Jurong industrial services and the extended route of Bus Service 99.
