Further Bus Service Developments in Jurong East (2002 – Present)
In 2002, Jurong Bus Depot, which served as the primary depot for SBS bus services based in the far West, was relocated to Soon Lee Bus Depot. As such, Teban Gardens Bus Terminal, which was located outside the depot, ceased operations, after its Bus Service 143 was extended to Jurong East after integration with former Feeder Bus Service 331.
In 2011, the former Jurong East Bus Interchange was closed and demolished to make way for new residential and commercial developments like J Gateway, Jurong East Mall (JEM) and Westgate Mall & Tower. The 1st Jurong East Temporary Bus Interchange, located east of the original bus interchange, took its place as the central hub for Jurong East New Town for several years.
In 2016, Tower Transit Singapore took over as the anchor operator of Jurong East Bus Interchange, after clinching the contract for the Bulim Bus Package a year prior. All but 6 bus services operating out of the interchange are transferred to the new operator under 2 tranches in June of that year.
Jurong East Bus Interchange was once again relocated to a new but smaller interim facility located opposite the 1st 2 interchanges in 2020, adjacent to the defunct JCube shopping mall and Jurong Regional Library, as the 1st interim bus interchange was slated to make way for a new integrated commercial and retail development, which will also house the Integrated Transport Hub (ITH) for Jurong East by 2027.
With the reduced capacity of the 2nd interim bus interchange and the proposed ITH, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) proposed the construction of Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange, located off Venture Drive, to complement the existing operations of Jurong East Bus Interchange. This secondary bus interchange was completed and opened on 26th November 2023, catering to 4 trunk services by the public bus operators, as well as the cross-border Causeway Link shuttle services CW3, CW4 & CW4S to Malaysia.
