Deployment Timeline of High Capacity Buses

Since 1977, high capacity buses have been operated by public bus operators in Singapore to cater to bus services with high passenger demands by providing more capacity with more seats or standing space. The deployment of such buses also helps to optimise limited manpower and fleet operated on heavily utilised bus services.

2 types of high capacity buses are currently operated by public bus operators in Singapore – double-deck buses and articulated buses. SBS Transit, SMRT Buses and Tower Transit Singapore currently operate both double-deck and articulated buses, while Go-Ahead Singapore operate double-deck buses only.

Deployment History for High Capacity Buses (2005 – Present)

The following bullet list reflects the timeline of commencement dates for the deployment of high capacity double-deck/articulated buses on operational bus services that currently operate them on a permanent basis only since 2005.

Other operational bus services which started the operation of high capacity buses between 1977 and 2004 are excluded due to the lack of information on their actual implementation dates. Deployment of high capacity buses on defunct bus services are available in Page 2 of this article.

Double-Deck Buses

Double-deck buses were first introduced by the Singapore Bus Service (SBS) in 1977, operating on now defunct Bus Service 86 between Hougang New Town and Shenton Way. Additional capacity is provided through more seating on the upper deck in comparison to single-deck buses. However, standing is not allowed on the upper deck due to safety reasons.

With the introduction of air-conditioned double-deck buses since 1993, the overall capacity for double-deck buses have increased with more seats fitted on their upper decks. Previously, the total capacity on non-air-conditioned double-deck buses are comparable with that of air-conditioned single-deck buses due to the shorter lengths of non-air-conditioned double-deck buses than standard rigid buses.

Double-deck buses used to be operated by SBS (now SBS Transit) only until 2014, when SMRT Buses started its operation of new double-deck buses procured to replace its retiring fleet of articulated buses. Initially, SMRT Buses intended to deploy double-deck buses on heavily utilised trunk and Express services only, as commuters tend to travel longer distances on these services. However, as more double-deck buses were purchased by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in favour of articulated buses, SMRT Buses eventually started deploying double-deck buses on feeder services from 2018.

Tower Transit Singapore and Go-Ahead Singapore started operating double-deck buses when taking over their awarded route packages under the Bus Contracting Model (BCM) in 2016.

Since the 1st quarter of 2021, 100 double-deck buses with an additional exit door have been introduced on bus services across the 4 bus operators.

Articulated Buses

Articulated buses were first introduced by the Trans-Island Bus Service (TIBS) in 1996 on Bus Service 171. Additional capacity is provided through more seating and standing space in its trailer section. The first generation of Mercedes-Benz O405G buses introduced in 1997 had a higher overall capacity than air-conditioned double-deck buses operating at the time.

In 1998 and 1999 respectively, 2 articulated demonstrator units, registered as SBS998Y and SBS999U were operated by SBS/SBS Transit on Bus Services 18, 195 and 290. Both units were subsequently exported overseas in 2006, as double-deck buses were deemed more suitable for SBS Transit bus services after the trial periods of both articulated buses. However, articulated buses made a recurrence under SBS Transit in 2018, when 10 units of the MAN NG363F articulated buses were transferred to the operator under the Seletar Bus Package. All articulated buses under SBS Transit are restricted to operate on feeder bus services within Yishun only.

Tower Transit Singapore commenced the operation of articulated buses on Bus Service 858 when the operator takes over the bus service in 2021.
