Main Article: Implementation of Air-Conditioned Bus Routes
Since 1984, air-conditioned buses have been operated by public bus operators in Singapore, providing greater comfort for the daily commute of passengers. During their initial launch, they were considered a luxury, as they charged higher fares compared to regular non-air-con (NAC) buses.
However, in the late 1980s, several new trunk services were operated with a full fleet of air-conditioned buses, which would eventually become a standard for all operational bus services in the 2000s.
When more air-conditioned buses were procured in the 1990s, they were progressively deployed on the remaining NAC bus services, with half of the existing NAC buses in the fleet being swapped out for air-conditioned buses. This provided commuters with a choice between air-con and NAC buses on these bus services, commonly dubbed as partial air-con (PAC) bus services.
In the late 1990s, many NAC single-deck buses were retrofitted with air-conditioning systems, in an effort to increase the number of air-conditioned buses operating on the roads. These converted air-con (CAC) buses led to Trans-Island Bus Services (TIBS) to become the 1st public bus operator in Singapore to achieve a full fleet of air-conditioned buses in 2001.
The remaining NAC buses under SBS Transit that were not converted to air-con buses served out their statutory lifespans until Sep 2013, when they were fully de-commissioned.
This article provides an overview of the progressive conversion of operational and defunct* bus services from an NAC bus fleet to a fully air-con (FAC) bus fleet.
*Only defunct bus services discontinued after 1 Jan 2010 are included in this article.
